Underbust Corsets

The underbust corset offers the greatest range of corset designs. Underbust corsets can be very large foundation garments that extend from just below the bust, or even above the bust if breast cut-outs are used, to below the knees. Alternatively, underbust garments can be very small and take the form of waist cinchers. Waist cinchers extend from just above the waist to just below the waist. Tight fitting belts are often employed in this way, but waist cinchers are fully boned foundation garments designed in the same way as traditional corsets.

The primary reason to wear an underbust corset design, rather than an overbust corset, is to constrict the waist while allowing the breasts to have a more natural shape. Consequently, the underbust corset tends to be very popular among women with large breasts. The underbust corset reduces the waist measurement significantly, which serves to emphasis the size of big breasts. However, underbust corset designs are also popular with smaller bosom women. The overbust corset design tends to be optimized for breasts that are larger than a B-cup (UK sizing). Consequently, smaller boobs tend to pop over the top of overbust corsets. Another reason for the adoption of underbust corsets by women with a large bosom is the difficulty in finding overbust corsets that can accommodate large breasts without causing painful breast compression.
Although breast cut-outs, or open cup designs, are sometimes employed, most underbust corsets start below the breasts. The majority of these underbust corset designs have a straight top edge, but some have a small degree of breast shaping in the form of a slightly curved top edge. This breast shaping is purely aesthetic in nature. Most underbust corsets aim to start at just below the sternum, but this is only a rough guide.
The avoidance of breast shaping means that underbust corsets have a much simpler design than overbust alternatives. Contemporary underbust corsets can tend to look very simple and plain in construction. However, there is a growing trend towards a more vintage corset design. These vintage corsets have a resemblance to elasticated foundation garments from the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s. The stimulus for this retro corset look is probably the increasing popularity of the burlesque scene. Consequently, the focus of design detail for underbust corsets tends to be the pubic area. In particular, suspender drops are often employed to make the pubic triangle a focal point of underbust corset designs. The use of suspenders, or garters, gives emphasis to the vintage, or burlesque features of the underbust corset design. Some of the designs create a large open area around the pubic triangle. This approach is very popular with women who do not shave pubic hair as it allows the pubic hair to be fully exposed. Ideally the color of the underbust corset should be chosen to give good contrast between the corset and the wearers pubic hair.
Alternatively, the underbust corset might extend to just above the crotch, or even below the crotch. This gives an appearance similar to a vintage style garter. Many people find concealment of the pubic region to be sexually stimulating. This form of underbust corset also extends the figure modification down the hips and creates a hobble effect that is popular in many bondage scenarios. It can make sexual intercourse more difficult as vaginal penetration is significantly more restricted by corsets that extend below the level of the crotch.
The number of suspender drops employed by underbust corsets varies from zero to 4, 6, 8 and even as many as 10. Only four garters are actually required. Two are located either side of the pubic area at the front of the corset and form the pubic hair enclosure. The other two garters are located at the side of the corset, passing over the hips. Additional garters are added purely for aesthetic reasons, although they can contribute to the hobble effect of some underbust corset designs.
