Overbust Corsets
Corset girls wearing breast squashing over bust corsets.
The overbust corset starts above the bosom and extends to below the waist. As with underbust versions, the overbust corset can extend below the level of the crotch and can include suspender drops. However, most overbust corset designs stop just above the pubic triangle and focus design features on the bust area. Overbust corsets provide breast support through compression of the bust. This approach is similar to early breast binders, however, overbust corsets provide more breast shaping than simple breast binders and bandeaus.

Most overbust corsets have a simple, straight top edge. Breast shaping is provided by increases the internal volume at the top and front of the overbust corset corset through the use of triangular shaped fabric. The level of breast shaping is far simpler than current breast support garments. The lower part of the breast, from the base to just above the nipple, is simultaneously squeezed against the chest wall and pushed upwards. This creates a significant amount of breast uplift and results in the classic overflowing bosom look. However, most corset manufacturers do not offer bust sizes linked to breast cup size. This means that most overbust corsets are only suited to a relatively narrow range of bust size. As a general rule, most overbust corset designs are not suitable for women with small breasts. Breasts smaller than a B cup (UK breast sizes) are not compressed by the over bust corset as the breast volume is smaller than the internal volume of the corset. Similarly, large breasts also have difficulty with overbust corsets. Breasts bigger than an E cup are severely compressed by most standard overbust corsets. The back lacing of the corset does allow some flexibility, but loosening too much can reduce the waist compression effect of the overbust corset. It should be noted that many women with big breasts actively seek excessive breast compression, either as a form of breast bondage or for the aesthetic effect created by large breasts held rigidly in place and elevated by the uplift effect of the overbust corset.
The usual corset solution for women with large breasts is either an underbust coset, or a breast cut-out corset. Breast cut-out, or open cup corsets are a hybrid between underbust and overbust corsets. The corset extends above the bust, but the breasts hang freely and unsupported as in underbust corset designs. However, even breast cut-out corsets have limitations. As with standard overbust corsets, manufacturers tend to offer only one size option. For many corset users, the breast opening is either too large or too small for their breasts. The breast opeing tends to be optimized for C cup breasts. This can make the breast cut-out corset uncomfortable with women with large breasts.
Some corset manufacturers do produce overbust corset designs that are suitable for women with big breasts. These overbust corsets increase the bosom volume available through breast shaping techniques. This breast volume increase is quite difficult to achieve while maintaining traditional corset design characteristics. The simplest solution is to add breast cups to the overbust corset. Corset purists do not consider this to be an appropriate solution to accommodating large breasts, as breast cups eliminate the breast compression and the breast uplift effect of traditional overbust corsets. Some overbust corsets do succeed in increasing breast volume to accommodate large breasts, but these tend to be expensive options.
Despite the breast size issues related to overbust corsets, then remain very popular items. Overbust corsets are designed to fit the average bust size range of most women. Although many women fall outside of this range, there are sufficient overbust corset options to meet this need. Consequently, most people can find an overbust corset to meet their needs. The overbust corset also has a couple of advantages over underbust corset designs. Firstly, overbust corsets have a significant breast enhancing technique. Even small breasts can be made to appear voluptuous using an overbust corset, especially when this is combined with waist cinching. The other primary advantage of overbust corsets is their use as outer wear as well as being a foundation garment. Overbust corsets are becoming an increasingly common sight in night clubs, as well as music videos.
